Our Diabetes Risk Panel evaluates three significant components of your health: your glucose (blood sugar) levels as per the time of testing, your Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) which offers insight into your mean blood sugar levels over the prior three months, and the total cholesterol present in your bloodstream.
During a diabetes screening, your doctor will test for three main things: glucose, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), and cholesterol.
Glucose: Glucose is the main sugar found in your bloodstream. It comes from the food you eat and is used for energy by your cells. High blood sugar levels are a sign of diabetes.
Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): HbA1c is a protein found in red blood cells. It measures your average blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. High HbA1c levels are a sign of diabetes.
Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your blood. It is needed for many important functions, but too much cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
People with diabetes are more likely to have high blood sugar, high HbA1c, and high cholesterol. These conditions can increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious health problems. If you are at risk for diabetes, talk to your doctor about getting screened. Early detection and treatment can help you prevent or delay the complications of diabetes.
Here is some additional information about each of the tests:
Glucose: The glucose test is the most common way to screen for diabetes. It involves drinking a sugary drink and then having your blood sugar level checked after a certain amount of time.
HbA1c test : The HbA1c test is a more accurate way to screen for diabetes. It is also used to monitor people who already have diabetes to make sure their blood sugar levels are under control.
Cholesterol Test: The cholesterol test measures the levels of different types of cholesterol in your blood. It is used to screen for heart disease and stroke.
If you have any of the following risk factors for diabetes, you should talk to your doctor about getting screened:
Age: Your risk of developing diabetes increases as you get older.
Family history: If you have a family history of diabetes, you are at increased risk for developing the disease.
Weight: Being overweight or obese is a major risk factor for diabetes.
Race: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans are more likely to develop diabetes than Caucasian Americans.
Pregnancy: Gestational diabetes, which is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy, increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
If you are diagnosed with diabetes, it is important to work with your doctor to develop a treatment plan. Treatment for diabetes usually includes lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. In some cases, medication or insulin injections may also be necessary. With early detection and treatment, people with diabetes can live long and healthy lives.
Diabetes is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Symptoms often include frequent urination, increased thirst, and increased hunger. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and nerve damage.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps the body use glucose for energy. People with type 1 diabetes must take insulin injections to manage their blood sugar levels.
Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. It is caused by a combination of factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and age. Type 2 diabetes can often be managed with lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising regularly. However, some people with type 2 diabetes may also need to take medication or insulin injections.
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. It is caused by the body's inability to produce enough insulin to meet the demands of the growing fetus. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after the baby is born, but it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
BeeperMD providers can administer type 2 diabetes screening tests and perform examinations. We can review and help you understand the key health indicators from the test results and also make treatment recommendations.
